Village urges action in response to train derailment investigation findings
EAST PALESTINE, OHIO – July 26, 2024 – The Village of East Palestine acknowledges the final report issued by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) regarding the train derailment and subsequent hazardous materials release involving Norfolk Southern Railway train 32N. The report identifies the primary cause as the overheating and subsequent failure of a bearing on one of the railcars. The comprehensive investigation has brought to light critical findings and recommendations to improve safety and emergency response protocols. Given the proximity of the tracks to the community and the high volume of trains that pass through daily, the implementation of these recommendations is critical to the Village. Ensuring the safety of residents and preparedness of the Village and first responders requires significant resources and coordination, and the Village urges the NTSB recommendations to be followed by those entities to whom the recommendations are targeted. The Village is committed to supporting these efforts.
Gratitude to First Responders and Agencies
The Village of East Palestine extends its deepest gratitude to the brave first responders, including our dedicated local volunteer firefighters, who acted swiftly and in good faith to protect our community during the incident. Despite the challenges and risks they faced, their commitment to our safety was unwavering.
We also thank the Columbiana County Emergency Management Agency (EMA), Village of East Palestine Police Department, state and federal agencies, and all government entities involved in the response efforts. Their support and coordination were invaluable during this critical time.
Commitment to Health and Safety
Looking ahead, the Village of East Palestine is committed to ensuring the health and safety of our residents. The NTSB report underscores the need for improved training and communication among emergency responders. We support the recommendations to enhance firefighter training standards, update emergency response plans, and ensure better coordination and communication during emergencies. While these recommendations do not directly address the Village of East Palestine, we are committed to advocating for their implementation. To do so successfully, we will need significant additional resources and collaboration among stakeholders to ensure that our community is fully prepared and equipped for any future emergencies.
We are working closely with the Columbiana County EMA and other relevant authorities to implement these recommendations and improve our preparedness for future incidents. Our priority remains the well-being of our community, and we will continue to advocate for measures that enhance safety and prevent such incidents from occurring again.
Future Actions
The aftermath of this incident has raised concerns about potential long-term health and environmental impacts. The Village is committed to continuing to advocate for its first responders and residents and will continue to work with health experts and environmental agencies to address the need for monitoring, treatment, and remediation of these issues to ensure the continued safety and well-being of our residents.
The Village of East Palestine remains steadfast in its dedication to creating a safer and more resilient community. We thank our residents for their strength and support during this time and pledge to take all necessary actions to protect our future and prevent such a disaster from occurring again to the detriment of another community.
